The 2009 TQHA Yearling Sale ended on a positive note, getting a boost from two $100,000 yearlings in the final session held on Saturday at Sam Houston Race Park. Even though the key numbers were down from the previous year, the final day produced the auction's highest prices and results were stronger than the opening day statistics. Six of the eight top sellers sold on Saturday. With the overall economy across the country down most sale goers thought the sale was better than expected. Many people had predicted before the sale that the statistics would be down at least 20%. "We were tickled pink with our consignment," Jude Robicheaux of Robicheaux Ranch said on Monday. "Some of ours (yearlings) brought more than we expected. If you brought a good individual into the ring with a good pedigree page they brought what they were worth," he added. The 266 horses that sold during the auction's two-day run grossed $2,428,000 and averaged $9,128. The median price was $5,200. Compared to 2008, when 261 yearlings were sold, the gross declined 23% from $3,016,400. The average fell 21% from $11,557 and the median dropped 26% from $7,000. Toscana Syndicate purchased the high-seller, La Toscana, a Feature Mr Jess ½ sister to 2009 Heritage Place Futurity(G1) winner Ragazzo. Consigned by Haddad Ranch, agent for George Haddad, the filly out of stakes-placed Las Alamitos by First Down Dash, brought a final bid of $105,000. Ing Ramiro Villarreal Tostado purchased the second-high seller, a colt by Corona Cartel out of Tiny First Effort, by First Down Dash. Dallas Cartel broght a final bid of $100,000 and was consigned by Robicheaux Ranch. Robicheaux Ranch was the leading consignor with 17 yearlings bringing $319,100. Jose M. Flores was the leading buyer of four yearlings totaling $108,000.
